Fishing report - September 2026
September saw a welcome turnaround on the River Naver after a prolonged period of low water in August, developing into one of the most productive spells of the 2026 season. Early autumn rainfall and a series of fresh rises throughout the month revitalised the river, encouraged fish movement and delivered excellent sport across the beats.
The month began with a welcome weekend spate after several weeks of low, falling water. As river levels responded to fresh rainfall, catches improved significantly and continued to build through the month. Week 35 produced a good number of salmon and grilse, followed by an outstanding Week 36 which proved to be the standout week of the season. Catches remained strong through the final weeks, providing a fitting finale to what had already been a successful season for the Naver.
Particularly encouraging was the widespread nature of the catches, with fish reported from pools and streams throughout the river system. Fresh water, cooler temperatures and settled autumn conditions combined to create favourable fishing conditions and encourage a strong late-season run of fish. The largest fish of the season, a superb 24lb salmon from Dal Mallart on Beat 1, was landed during the month, while several other fish in excess of 20lb were reported.
By the close of the season on 30th September, the River Naver had recorded the fifth-highest season catch of the last ten years. Remarkably, more than half of the season’s catch came from early August onwards, aided by an exceptional run of late season fish which transformed the outcome of the year.
September also saw continued participation in the river’s fish monitoring programme, with numerous fish tagged during the month and additional recaptures recorded, helping to build understanding of fish movements within the catchment.
As the fishing season closes, attention now turns to the spawning period and winter maintenance work throughout the river system. Following an exceptional finish to the 2026 season, there is real optimism for 2027 on the River Naver.
On behalf of Craig, David, John, Sofiia, Jacob and the rest of the team, thank you to all our guests who visited the River Naver during 2026. We greatly appreciate your support and look forward to welcoming you back next season.
